Watergate 5k is a trail 5km event organised by Low Fell Running Club and is a two-lap course through Watergate Country Park, close to Lobley Hill in Gateshead. With a few uphill sections on the course, it’s not the easiest of 5km races but certainly a great race to enter.

First up was the junior race which was 1 lap of the country park (2.5km). Mary Parkin had a fantastic race and was the 2nd overall female finisher in a time of 9.47 (6th overall) and also 2nd in the female under 15 age category.   Great running from Euan McKinnon who was 7th male under 11 and Freya McKinnon who was 5th in the female under 13 category.

Following on from the juniors was the senior race which was also part of the North East Masters Athletics Association Championships. A great turnout of 17 Heaton athletes and some brilliant results for the club, which included several race prizes and many NEMAA medals.

The on-form David Daniel Young was 2nd overall and 1st the MV35 age category in a time of 16.02, only six seconds behind the race winner. Louis Head was 4th overall in a time of 16.26. With the help of these two high overall placings, Heaton men picked up the 2nd place men’s team prize with Adam McKenna completing the team (25th overall).

Other Heaton prizes on the night were Laura Oldfield 2nd in the FV35 category (20.55) and Simon Jobe 2nd in the MV45 (19.28).
