Race Update – Bridges of the Tyne & Tynedale 10k

Following on from a race-filled weekend just gone, the North East calendar doesn’t let up at this time of year. There were two more races mid-week that were well attended by Heaton Harriers.

Tuesday 5th July – Bridges of the Tyne 5 mile race

A popular 5 mile road race on the Newcastle Quayside; this is a great event put on by Tyne Bridge Harriers, and is a chance for a 5 mile PB (and one of the few chances locally). It always sells out really quickly, and there’s usually a waiting list for spare places. On a nice evening like this Tuesday it’s one of the best races around, with a good crowd of supporters and onlookers, and finishing at the Tyne Bar definitely helps 🙂 Definitely worth following their Facebook page for announcements of when entries open if you fancy this one in future!

James McKenzie, 9th place
John James, first V65+ male

A good Heaton showing of 29 ran this one, and highlights include James McKenzie finishing 9th, just 2 days after 5th in the Great North 10k. Chairman John James with an impressive run to win the V65+ category. Also, top 5 age cat finishes for Janette Kilgour, Sue Linsley, George Routledge, Laura Percy and Allen Mullis. Well done all!

Wednesday 6th July – Tynedale ‘Pie and Peas’ 10k

Another local favourite, the Tynedale 10k at Ovingham is a mildly undulating 10k, mainly run on lanes and riverside paths. I don’t know if it’s still the case but the crazy downhill first mile has had it’s own prize for the first person past it; ensuring a mad dash down the hill, and some regrets in the last few miles by those who gunned it too much!

It’s another friendly and well organised race, and as the title suggests, you get a pie at the end. Which this author has yet to see bettered as a post-race freebie 😀

8 Heaton Harriers made the journey over for this one. Hats off to our first three men who took the 2nd Team prize with some fantastic times: David Young (8th) in 34:13, Louis Head (11th) in 34:38, and Eddie Knight (13th) in 35:05. Top 5 age cat finishes also for Jeremy Smith, John James (again! total machine), and Judith Archibold. Well done to all that ran.

I should mention the ‘sister’ event to this one, the Tynedale ‘Jelly Tea’ 10 mile race, is also a great event, in which you receive Jelly amongst other things! It’s also a good GNR warm up. Get entering here.
