Heaton Awards Night & Ringtons Cup 2023

Thursday saw the annual Heaton Harriers awards night at the Lochside pub. As is now tradition the annual awards for Athlete of the Year, Most Improved Athlete of the Year and the Cross Country Champion were presented by our chairperson John James after the annual Ringtons Cup 3 mile race.

This year we introduced a new award voted for by members of the club for Harriers Member of the Year recognising contribution to the club over the last year.

Ringtons Cup Winners:

  • Male – David Young
  • Female – Jo Woodcock

Ringtons Cup Handicap Winners

  • Male – Louis Head
  • Female – Eleanor Walker

Athlete of the Year:

  • Male – David Young
  • Female – Ellie Reed

Both David and Ellie had some outstanding runs this year with various wins and podium finishes across multiple distances and terrains. Both are worthy winners of this award. David was fastest runner at the Birtleys Senior Relays in January, 2nd at the Palma Half Marathon, 2nd at the Prudhoe Miners 5 miler, 3rd in the Tynedale Jelly Tea, 3rd at the Watergate 5k. David has also been first finisher at several local races including the Kielder Dark Skies 14 miler. David also broke the Monthly Mile course record (4:46) in August and broke the Handicap course record last night (15:27) He was also the first Heaton Harrier to win the Town Moor parkrun since 2016.

Ellies achievements in the last year include breaking PBs across all distances she has ran from 5k to half marathon, constantly being the first Heaton female in lots of races including Brampton and the Brass Monkey and winning some like the Kielder Dark Skies 14 miler. Ellie was 4th in the individual Harrier League this season, ran every cross-country event and placed as counter each time from the fast pack. Her cross country season accumulated in winning the British Masters Cross Country V35.

Most Improved Athlete of the Year

  • Male – Bryan Ankers
  • Female – Jacqueline Turner

Both Bryan and Jacquie have improved immensely over the last 12 months breaking PBs across various distances and moving up training groups in the process. Bryan has constantly placed as a counter in this year’s Harrier League, broken his 5k, 10k and Half Marathon PBs by some distance and placed in local races. Jacquie has broken her half marathon PB by some distance and improved her 5k times whilst recently moving up age categories. Both are worthy winners of this award

Heaton Harriers Cross Country Champions

  • Female – Ellie Reed

The Inter Club Cross Country Championships were held on 11th March 2023 at the Rising Sun. Age category prizes were also awarded as well as Nina Cameron and Jeremy Smith winning the Redgate trophy for the best handicap times.

Harriers Member of the Year

  • Laura Percy

Laura was a clear winner voted for by over 1/3 of the members of Heaton Harriers. Laura goes above and beyond her committee role as vice-captain making everyone feel welcome regardless of age, gender or length at the club. Well done Laura and thank you for everything you do for the club.
