On a very cold Sunday morning with snow on the ground, we had 9 Heaton Harriers taking part in the 63rd Blyth Sands race.
This is a 5 miles out and back course running on the beach at Blyth with a handicap based on age and gender. Not only did participants have the cold weather to contend with in December this involved climbing through and over groynes, trampling seaweed, trying to find some kind of grip in rough sand, and then when it was compact splashing through tide puddles.
For some, it might sound like torture but the smiles from the 9 members we had taking part said otherwise. And post-race refreshments are provided in the form of a festive shot of port and a mince pie.
We had some fantastic results on the day and the Heaton men’s team were 2nd overall. This was made up of Ian Norman, Jack Shawcross and Jeremy Smith.
Ian Norman was also 2nd overall on the day to finish the race.
Well done to everyone who took part. Full results can be found here.
