The Blaydon Race 2024

For Newcastle and Heaton Harriers, the 9th of June is all about The Blaydon Race. Just like in previous years, we had an impressive representation of 81 members running, and it was fantastic to see some of our members showing their support as spectators too.

The iconic local event which involved 4000 runners Gannin’ alang the Scotwood Road, started as in recent years on the revised route from the Quayside. There were a few showers, but everyone was in high spirits starting the race singing and of course, we managed to get the obligatory team shot! The route measured 5.8 miles and finished in Blaydon where runners received their T-shirt and goodie bag which included a Stottie, crisps and a local Blaydon race beer.

We had some exceptional performances this year, and full race results can be found here.

First Heaton Harrier home and in 10th place overall was the on-form Fred Davies with a time of 30.02. Well done Fred!

Our first female Heaton Harrier was Jo Woodcock who was 10th place female overall and finished in a time of 35.54.

Age category prizes to note included:

Elaine Waters – 2nd V65

Pauline Chapman – 2nd V70+

A special mention to our junior members of the club who competed in this year’s event. Lucy Stutt was 6th female in the U19 female category and Charlie Digby 13th in the U19 male category.

Following the usual race traditions, our Heaton runners made their way back to Newcastle for the post-Blaydon social. A rather lengthy walk back from the bus drop off on the Quayside this year meant runners built up even more of an appetite. A massive thank you to Alison for organising a great spread of food which allowed our hungry runners and spectators to refuel and also rehydrate.
