Sunday saw the 70th annual Brampton to Carlisle 10-mile road race with some fantastic performances from many of our Heaton Harriers taking part.
For those unfamiliar with this race it is a traditional point-to-point road race on open roads that is very well supported across the region and further afield. It gives Heaton Harriers the rare opportunity to race against clubs from not only the North East but also the North West and Scottish regions with the odd professional athlete thrown in the mix. In the past Steve Cram and Ron Hill have won this race so today we were in good company with the double top 10 London Marathon finisher Phil Sesemann as well as racing in a field of over 700 runners.
Despite a few rain showers on the A69 across the Pennines and memories still fresh of the torrential downpours from Thursday’s training session, the weather cleared up nicely with bright blue skies, cool temperatures and a slight wind which provided for great racing conditions at 10 am in Brampton.
With the race quickly underway the field soon stretched out across the local roads and everyone was on their way to Carlisle.
Heaton Harriers fared well in a strong field. David Coe was the first Heaton finisher in 80th place overall in a time of 59:19 followed by Lee Daglish in 106th place (1:01:12) and then Jason Wall, fresh from the New York Marathon in 121st place (1:02:17)
Ellie Reed was the first Heaton woman in 140th place overall, 10th female and 2nd in the V35 age category in a time of 1:03:35. Ellie was also only 50 seconds outside of the all-time Heaton Harrier 10-mile women’s record! New member Jo Woodcock finished just behind as the 13th female finisher in a time of 1:04:01 so we’re all looking forward to your progress in a Heaton Harriers vest.
The race was rounded up with a collection of orange and black running t-shirts and a trip to the pub for a few drinks and a bite to eat before making our way back home.
In total 30 Heaton Harriers completed the race, well done to everyone. It was great to see so many white and green vests out across the field. Consolidated Heaton results are below. Full results can be found on the Timing Up North website and thanks to David Young for the photographs.
